Overview
Dr Tan is the Senior Consultant Urologist and Medical Director of Centre for Urology, Robotic & Minimally Invasive Surgery.
He is serving as the President of College of Surgeons, Singapore; 2019 – 2023.
Professionally, Dr Tan served as President of Singapore Urological Association in 2014 to 2016.
Dr Tan graduated from National University of Singapore in 1991. He subsequently underwent his advanced training in urology at Singapore General Hospital.
Upon the completion of his advanced training / Urology Board Examination in 2002, he underwent further training Clinical Fellowship in Laparoscopy and Endourology (accredited by Endourological Society, USA) at Duke University, USA under the guidance of Professor Glenn Preminger and Professor Albala (2002-2003). He also did a Preceptorship in Minimally Invasive Urology / Laparoscopic Surgery at Cleveland Clinic Foundation, USA (2003-2004).
Prior to his current practice, Dr Tan held the following positions at the Department of Urology, Singapore General Hospital.
- Senior Consultant Urologist
- Director of Endourology (Kidney Stone Disease)
- Director of Laparoscopy & Robotic Surgery (Minimally Invasive Surgery)
He was Council Member of Chapter of Urologists, Academy of Medicine Singapore (2009-11). He also served as a Council Member of Asian Society of Endourology.
Dr Tan is also actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. He served as Senior Clinical Lecturer with the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore and Adjunct Asst Professor with Duke – NUS Graduate Medical School.
He served as an Examiner for undergraduate medical examination MBBS. He was appointed as Visiting Professor to Capital Medical University, Beijing, China in 2008.
Dr Tan was the Organizing Chairman of Urofair 2011 cum Asia Pacific Congress of Urological Diseases. Dr Tan was also the Organizing Chairman of Urology Fair 2009 cum Asia Pacific Conference on Minimally Invasive Surgery and Urological Diseases.
Dr Tan was the Editorial Board Member for International Journal of Urology and Journal of Minimally Invasive Urology.
His clinical and research works were published in international peer-review journals including, Journal of Urology, Journal of Endourology, Urology, Urologic Clinics of North America, Current Opinion in Urology, Archives of Surgery, BJU International etc. He has written various book chapters in international textbooks including Smith’s Textbook of Endourology and Hinman’s Atlas of Urologic Surgery. He has authored multiple scientific articles and abstracts.
He serves as a Reviewer for various Journals including the Journal of Urology, Urological Research, BJU International, Singapore Medical Journal etc. He also has multiple presentation papers at regional and international conferences.
He has also been invited as International Faculty to give lectures in many countries, and perform Live Surgery Demonstration in the regions (China, Vietnam and Bangladesh).
Dr Tan has a special interest in Minimally Invasive Surgery in the treatment of Urological Cancers. He performs various advanced laparoscopic / robotic procedures, including laparoscopic adrenalectomy, partial and radical nephrectomy / nephroureterectomy for kidney cancer. In selected kidney cancers or urothelial cancer, he performs laparoscopic partial nephrectomy / kidney sparing surgery or endoscopic treatment. He also performs various complex robotic surgery such as:
- da Vinci robotic assisted radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer,
- robotic radical cystectomy for bladder cancer,
- robotic partial nephrectomy for kidney cancer,
- robotic pyeloplasty for pelvi-ureteric obstruction (PUJO)
He serves as a Kidney Transplant Surgeon with a special interest in laparoscopic donor nephrectomy. He was part of the team which performed the First dual kidney transplant in Singapore.
Dr Tan is active in developing new minimally invasive surgical procedures and has a special interest in Laparoscopic Endoscopic Single Site Surgery (LESS) / Single Port Surgery.
He performed the Single Port (LESS) laparoscopic radical nephrectomy for kidney cancer and LESS Pyeloplasty for PUJ obstruction in Singapore prior to major adoption.
